[Jakarta – Malang – Banyuwangi – Ijen Crater – Bali] Dec 2015 – Jan 2016 Day 1 and 2 Jakarta, Malang, Banyuwangi, Ijen Crater, Bali
2015 end of year is fast approaching and we are ready to welcome 2016! After a month struggling with final paper for my degree, I need some places to vent off the stress. We planned to go to Malang – Banyuwangi – Ijen Crater – Bali. First, our plan isn’t supposed to be like this. We supposed to visit Mt. Bromo. That’s why we booked a train to Malang. But since last month, Mt. Bromo started to erupt and the vulcanic activity is increasing ever since. So, for Plan B, we went to Banyuwangi and Ijen Crater, and since Bali is near Banyuwangi, we decided to visit Bali too. We started our journey for Pasar Senen Train Station, Jakarta boarding Matamarja Train to Malang Baru Train Station at 15.15. The train was comfortable at first, but becoming quickly crucifying at last. Our train supposed to arrived in Malang at 8am the next day. It’s about 18 hrs ! We booked the economy-seated class and the train stopped in several train station such as Semarang,
We arrived in Malang at 8am. Upon arrival, we had our breakfast in front of the station then we took Angkot AL to Arjosari Bus Station. At the bus station, we didn’t see any bus heading to Banyuwangi. Instead, we were approached by some ppl introducing themselves as ticket sellers or bus owners. We humbly rejected their offers as they offered ticket for 80k IDR which is expenive. After waiting for half and hour, we saw a bus going to Banyuwangi. We hop on to that one which still cost a bit expensive around 70k IDR. The nightmare didn’t stop there. To reach Banyuwangi, we needed to pass several cities such as Purwakarta, Probollingo, Jember, etc. At Probolinggo, we were told to get off the bus and passed to another bus. We got the same treatment at Jember. Actually, it’s not bad but quite uncomfortable with a load of baggages to carry. We departed from Malang at 10am and reach Banyuwangi at 8pm. It’s 10 hours !
Upon reaching Banyuwangi, we swiftly went finding dinner as we didn’t have lunch. After dinner, we still needed to walk to Karangasem Train Station for approx 3km. Our homestay is just beside the train station. We arrived at 10pm and quickly took a bath and took a rest. At 12am, we prepared to go to Mt. ijen and departed from the homestay at 1am. We rode rented motorcycle in the middle of midnight. The wind was cold as hell, like iceshards striking through your bone. The road was steep and didn’t have street lighting. It was a hell fun of ride !
At 2.30 am, we arrived at the starting point of Mt. Ijen. The entrance ticket is 5k IDR each. To reach the top, we need to climb a steep 3km path that took about 1.5 hrs. To catch blue fire, we needed to arrived in the crater before 4.30am. We stared to increase our pace but failed soon afterwards. It’s so exhausting. The path was steep and we barely had proper sleep for the last 72hrs. We barely had any exercises too in Jakarta. Haha ! Through a strong determination to see the legendary blue fire and keep reminding ourselves to be able to reach the top, we struggled to make our way. We reached the top after all and quickly went below to the crater for another 20mins. The struggle was real but definitely worth at the end. We reached inside the crater at 4.30 am and really grateful to be able to catch the glimpse of blue fire for a short while. Till 7am, we activated our narcissistic mode.
After all that narcissistic photos, we had to climb back to the top from the crater. It’s quite a struggle and exhausting. The most amazing one is the sulfur miner. They had to go up to the top carrying 120kgs of sulfur in their back. Even we without the load, it has been quite a struggle.
Heading back to the starting point, we were served a different kind of beauty from Mt. Ijen as the sun has risen. Nature is surely beautiful.
We reached the starting point at 8am and quickly ordered the legendary Indonesian Instant Noodle Indomie to refill our empty stomach. We headed back to the homestay at 8.30 am and reached there at 10am. We booked the train ticket to Banyuwangi Baru Train Station to catch the ferry to Bali. We hop on the train at 11.32 and reached BanyuwangiBaru at 11.45. We boarded our ferry at 12pm Jakarta Time and reached Bali at 2 pm Bali Time. Bali Time is UTC +8. In the harbour, we hopped on local bus to Ubung Bus Terminal, Denpasar. It took around 5 hrs and we reached Ubung at 7pm. Finally we ordered a car to bring us to our villa in Nusa Dua. It was a hell of journey from Jakarta to Bali. Now, we are going to explore Bali so Stay Tunee ! If you happen to be in Bali on 29 till 1, contact me so we can have fun together ! Cya!
